Diamond Ophthalmic Surgery

Dr. Artsybashev's diamond optical surgery is a refined version of the classical radial keratotomy method that was developed by Academician Dr. Svyatoslav Fyodorov and applied with success in the world for over 30 years. Dr. Sergey Artsybashev began working at the Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Complex in 1984.  He modified the original Fyodorov method in 1986 and has performed over 25,000 operations using his own personal technique. The main goal was to minimize the trauma to the cornea and provide a rapid recovery. This ultimately leads to a stable and stronger cornea. Further modifications incorporating elements of both radial and astigmatic keratotomy have allowed Academician Artsybashev to perform operations even on diseases such as keratoconus (very thin cornea), nystagmus (continuous movement of eyes), astigmatism and short-sightedness after corneal transplant and pseudophakia (implantation of an artificial crystalline lens), and also for improvement of visual acuity after laser correction surgery.

The technique of optical diamond surgery differs from the classical technique by a shorter duration of the operation, more sparing technique of the execution, difference in applied tools, and a lesser degree of traumatism. Dr. Artsybashev's optical surgery lasts from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. The classical method takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes. The rehabilitation period is much shorter with Dr. Artsybashev's technique.

It is important to emphasize that Dr. Artsybashev is able to perform the procedure equally well with both hands. This is essential for this kind of surgical intervention as cuts by the diamond knife are performed by one hand on one half of the cornea followed by the alternate hand on the other half.

Operations are performed under local anesthesia by a special micrometric diamond knife while using a microscope. Doctor Artsybashev operates with individual tools that are made in Switzerland under special order. The ultra thin diamond knife has over 3 sides for sharpening with the micrometric submission calculated to the micron. The knife's sharpened edges are only visible under an electronic microscope. Sharpening of each knife is performed for a certain number of hours under individual order by means of a special chemical processing in a Swiss laboratory.

An incision on the cornea is atraumatic, ultra thin, and can only be viewed under a microscope. Healing occurs very quickly after diamond ophthalmic surgery. Therefore, the result of the operation is visible at once. The results stabilize immediately. The rehabilitation period is very short. The day after the operation inflammation is practically absent. The results of operations using the classical method are unstable, with stabilization occurring in 1-2 weeks or in some cases a month after the procedure.
